Purpose
The Forum's purpose is to make the law on vegan food in the public sector understandable and usable. We gather the relevant legislation, conventions and case law in one freely accessible place, explain what they mean in practice, and provide argumentation support for anyone who needs to request — or assess a request for — vegan meals. The relevant settings include compulsory and upper-secondary schools, universities, hospitals, elderly care homes, correctional facilities, military service and other public-sector settings where meals are provided by the State.
Forum for Vegan Rights is an independent forum for legal information, analysis and practical resources. It is independent and non-partisan, but it is not neutral as to policy: FFVR provides legal information and analysis, presents legal arguments, provides practical resources, and advocates for the development of Swedish law towards a statutory right to vegan meals in the public sector. Throughout the website we distinguish established law, relevant case law, FFVR's legal interpretation and FFVR's policy position, and the reform we advocate is never presented as existing law.
How we work
For each question we identify the applicable legal instrument, show how it has been interpreted by the competent court or treaty body, and apply that interpretation to the concrete context of public catering. Primary sources — treaties, statutes and judgments — take precedence over commentary. Where academic or scientific literature is relevant we cite it as an external source; the Forum presents research, legislation and case law, it does not conduct research of its own.
Practical resources
Alongside the legal analysis, the Forum provides practical help: templates for requesting vegan food, examples of how to phrase a request, argumentation support drawn from legislation and case law, summaries of the leading judgments, guidance on what to do if a request is refused, information on which authorities and complaint bodies are relevant, and answers to frequently asked questions.
Editorial standards
- Every proposition of law is supported by an identifiable primary source.
- Judgments are cited by case name, application number and paragraph.
- Legislation is cited by short title, SFS number (where Swedish) and article.
- Contested interpretations are presented alongside their counter-arguments.
- Articles are dated and versioned; substantive updates are logged.
Independence
The Forum is editorially independent. Contributors declare conflicts of interest and no funder exercises editorial control. The Forum is not a public authority, a law firm or a legal representative, and the materials on this website do not constitute legal advice in individual cases.
Who the Forum is for
The Forum is written for anyone who needs to understand or assert the right to vegan food: individuals and relatives, pupils, patients and detainees, as well as public officials, schools and care providers assessing requests, and lawyers, researchers and journalists who need a reliable overview of a specialised area of human-rights law.
